My favorite version of this is by Kelly Willis--and there happens to be a really good live recording by her on YouTube.  The album version is more complex and thick production-wise, but this live version is also really good. Worth checking out both. What I Deserve, the CD she did this on, is one of my all-time favorite alt-country disks. Brilliant stuff. It's interesting the listen to Nick's original version and compare the two treatments.
